ABOUT THE OAHU GMRS INITIATIVE
The Oahu GMRS Initiative is a community initiative focused on establishing a 2-way radio communications system for the citizens of the City and County of Honolulu. It will use UHF 2-way radios that can be purchased at most electronics stores to provide simple FM communications in a coverage area covering the island of Oahu.
Hawaii is the only state in the United States that does not have a GMRS repeater system.
The primary goal is to provide a daily use communications system and a last resort method of communication in the event of an emergency You can have a lot of fun using GMRS radios and they can be very beneficial even if an emergency doesn't arise.
GMRS is not HAM radio and you do not have to take a test. GMRS primarily uses small hand-held radios and does not require antennas to be mounted on your home.
A license is required and can be purchased from the FCC for $75 There are no dues or membership fees associated with the Oahu GMRS Initiative or to utilize the system.
In a sentence; the Oahu GMRS Initiative is public citizens communications network designed for everyday use as well as emergency communications.
